In Russia, there is a tradition amongst women in which they take time for themselves and enjoy a “beauty day.” We often go to a banya (Russian steam room), and apply an assortment of natural products like honey, sea salt, coconut flakes, and essential oils for 3-5 hours in order to enjoy what is truly a beautifying experience.

An important component of this process is the fact that we share and mix ingredients to create original and effective facial or hair treatment, body wrapping, exfoliates, aroma breathing, contrast showers and, of course, healthy and natural food recipes.

Recipes for natural skin and hair treatments were passed generationally and survived because of the lack of mass-produced cosmetics during the Soviet Union. Despite the ocean of the well-known brands in the modern era, there is still tremendous value in homemade health and beauty recipes.

During a particularly memorable banya day, my dear friend and certified cosmetologist and skin therapist, Anna Timonina, shared a great avocado hair treatment with me. I wanted to reciprocate that to you, that is why I am excited to share that recipe!

This hair mask acts as a natural conditioner for the hair. Olive oil is absolutely perfect for nourishing dry, damaged hair, rejuvenating it and giving it a healthy glow. Castor oil makes hair feel soft and lustrous. Patchouli oil stimulates hair growth. Rosemary oil increases circulatory effects to the scalp. Avocado heals dry scalp (dandruff) by transferring essential amino acids and protein into the skin. Overall, this mask improves hair’s appearance and ultimately enhances self-confidence.

Now, it’s time to prepare the mask and enjoy the results!
