Your mother always told you to sit up straight, but with the average professional spending nearly six hours of their work day sitting at a desk, stooped shoulders and a slouched lower back are inevitable.With the help of these five posture-strengthening exercises, you’ll not only sit more comfortably, but you’ll also improve circulation, concentration and overall self-confidence. Maybe Mom was on to something!


1. Bent Over Row: Standing with legs hip-width apart, hinge forward with a straight back at a 45-degree angle. Squeeze shoulder blades as you pull weights toward chest with elbows pointing toward the ceiling. Release. Repeat for 10-15 reps.


2. Lat Pull-Down:  At a lat pull-down machine, grip the bar keeping hands shoulder-width apart, arms straight and torso upright. Pull bar down to your chest while squeezing shoulder blades together and engaging core. Hold for one second, then slowly return to start. Repeat for 10 reps.


3. Roll-Up: Lie face up and extend both arms over head. With legs tightly together, nod chin towards chest as you slowly roll up, one vertebrae at a time, until you reach your ankles or toes (depending on flexibility). Hold the position for two seconds, then reverse the movement back to start. Repeat for 5 reps.


4. Superman: Lie face down and extend both arms over head. Squeezing glutes and contracting your core, lift arms, head and legs about four inches off the floor, like Superman flying through the air. Hold the

position for three seconds, then lower. Repeat for 15 reps.


5. Plank: Start in push-up position, engaging the core and staring at the floor so your body makes one straight line. Keeping abdominals pulled in, hold the position for at least 30 seconds and up to a minute. Rest 30 seconds, then repeat for 5 reps.


Give these moves a shot and you should notice yourself standing straighter and feeling better in just a few weeks’ time. Now about that whole talking with your mouth full thing…
