Research

The studies below reference peer-reviewed research on the key active ingredients in this product. These are ingredient-level studies.

L-Lysine (as L-Lysine hydrochloride)

  • Griffith et al., 1987 · Dermatologica

Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial; n=52; 6 months; participants with recurrent herpes labialis

Participants with recurrent herpes labialis who received L-lysine supplementation (1,248 mg/day) showed statistically significant reductions in frequency, severity, and healing time of herpes recurrences compared to those who received placebo; the study authors noted that benefits were not observed in participants who reported high dietary arginine intake.

  • Smriga et al., 2007 · Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences

    Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled community-based trial; n=108; 3 months; adults with lysine-deficient dietary patterns

Participants with lysine-deficient dietary patterns who received L-lysine-fortified wheat showed statistically significant reductions in anxiety and stress-related measures compared to those who did not receive fortified wheat; the population studied had baseline lysine deficiency and results may not generalize to lysine-sufficient individuals.

How it works

Every ingredient, chosen with intention.

Here's what's in this bottle - and why each ingredient earned its place in the formula.

  1. L-Lysine

    L-Lysine as L-lysine hydrochloride

One of the nine essential amino acids the body cannot synthesize on its own, serving as a building block for proteins including collagen. Delivered in free-form as the HCl salt, a stable, water-soluble compound absorbed directly without requiring digestion to liberate it from a protein chain first.

    Why we chose it

Lysine is the limiting amino acid in most plant-based diets, it's the first essential amino acid to fall short when eating primarily grains with few legumes. At 500mg of free-form lysine HCl per capsule, this provides a consistent, rapidly absorbed daily amount without restructuring the whole diet.

Questions, answered

What customers often ask.

Why is lysine the amino acid most plant-based eaters need?
Lysine is the limiting amino acid in grains: rice, wheat, oats, and corn all have low lysine relative to the other essential amino acids. Plant-based eaters who rely heavily on grains without balancing with legumes are most likely to fall short. Supplementing with free-form lysine HCl fills that gap directly.
Should I take this with food or on an empty stomach?
Free-form amino acids are typically absorbed more rapidly on an empty stomach. Some people prefer taking it 30 minutes before a meal. That said, taking it with a small amount of food is fine if you prefer, it's absorbed either way.
Can I take this alongside zinc or vitamin C?
Yes, L-Lysine, zinc, and vitamin C are frequently combined and do not negatively interact. All three are common daily supplements with complementary roles: lysine as a structural amino acid, zinc and vitamin C as cofactors for collagen synthesis and immune function.
How long before I notice a difference?
L-Lysine is an essential amino acid, its role is foundational rather than acute. If you've been running a chronic dietary deficit, bringing levels up consistently over four to eight weeks tends to be when most people who track their nutrition notice a shift. There's no rapid observable effect like a stimulant.
What does 'free form HCl' mean?
L-Lysine hydrochloride is lysine bonded to hydrochloric acid as a stabilizing salt, the same form your stomach acid would produce naturally. 'Free form' means it's not locked inside a protein chain that requires digestion to release it first, so absorption is more direct and rapid.
Is this safe to take daily long-term?
L-Lysine is an essential amino acid found naturally in food and is considered safe for daily supplementation at 500mg doses. Please consult your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or managing a kidney condition, high-dose amino acid supplements generally warrant monitoring in those contexts.

One less thing to worry about

I have dealt with occasional lip flare-ups since college, usually when travel, bad sleep, and too much sun all land in the same week. A friend mentioned lysine years ago, but I was never consistent enough to know whether it mattered. This time I decided to give it a fair shot and kept the bottle next to my toothbrush. I took it daily for three months and wrote a tiny note in my calendar whenever I felt that familiar tingling. The first month was ordinary. During month two I had a stressful work trip, slept maybe five hours a night, and expected my lip to act up. It never progressed beyond a faint tingle that was gone the next morning. Month three included a beach weekend and again, no full outbreak. Obviously one person and one season are not a scientific study, and I still use sunscreen and pay attention to rest. What I can say is that this routine has been easy and my usual pattern has been quieter. The tablets are larger than a basic vitamin but smooth enough to swallow with a full glass of water. There is no strong odor and they have not bothered my stomach. My sister asked if I had found some secret because I wasnt carrying lip cream everywhere. I told her, 'nothing secret, I just finally remembered the same supplement every day.' That consistency may be the whole story, but I am happy enough with how the last few months went that I bought another bottle before this one ran out

Part of my daily routine

i started taking lysine daily after getting tired of the same lip spot showing up whenever I was stressed or short on sleep. I also keep using my usual topical care, so this isnt a scientific test. Still, the last few months have been calmer and the one flare I noticed felt shorter and less annoying. Tablets are easy enough to swallow and theres no taste. already bought a backup bottle for travel

Keeping it stocked

I started taking lysine because lip flare ups always seem to show up when I am stressed. I still use my usual topical stuff if needed, but daily lysine support seems to help me feel less caught off guard. No taste, no stomach issues, easy reorder. What I appreciate most is that it is uneventful. I take it with my other morning vitamins and move on. The capsules are not tiny, but they are smooth and I dont dread them. I have had two stressful months at work and only one small lip situation, which for me is better than normal. Keeping it stocked for travel too because that is when my routine usually falls apart.

Gap filler for plant-based diet

Lysine tends to be lower in plant-based diets. Supplementing gave me better energy, less susceptibility to illness, and no cold sores since February. Filling the gap clearly helped.

Gut health bonus

Taking lysine for cold sores but noticed my gut has been calmer too. Apparently lysine plays a role in gut health. Unexpected bonus.

Works best taken daily

Key with lysine is consistency. I take it every morning without fail. The days I miss, I feel more vulnerable. When I'm consistent I have almost no outbreaks.

Best thing for my lips

Cold sores on my lips used to wreck my confidence. Took lysine daily for 4 months. One mild outbreak vs the usual 5+ per year. Life changing in a very specific, personal way.

Consistent use is the key

The thing about lysine is that it builds up over time. Inconsistent use doesn't work as well. Daily consistent supplementation is what made the difference for me.

Cheap effective and consistent

This is not an expensive supplement and it just works. No side effects, easy to take, and the cold sore reduction is dramatic. Simple evidence-based solution that I wish I'd tried years ago.

Easy capsule real results

Small, easy to swallow, no taste, no smell. And the cold sore frequency has dropped from monthly to once in 4 months. Simple supplement with a real effect.

Controls stress-triggered outbreaks

My cold sores always appeared when I was stressed. Started daily lysine and added extra at the first sign of stress or illness. Went from monthly outbreaks to 1 in 4 months. The supplement is clearly the variable that changed.

Keep these stocked

Never want to run out. It has become that central to my routine. Outbreaks down, skin better, immune system strong.

Cold sores are basically gone

Used to get 4-5 cold sores a year. Started lysine daily and have had ONE in the past 4 months. That one came during an extremely stressful week. This supplement works.

Heals faster when I do get one

Still occasionally get an outbreak when I'm really sick or exhausted. But the duration is shorter and the severity is less since I started daily lysine. If you can't prevent them completely, at least make them faster.

Stacking with vitamin C

Taking lysine and vitamin C together for immune support. Haven't had a cold or outbreak in 4 months. Best health streak I've had in years.

Cold sore prevention on a budget

Antivirals cost a lot. Lysine costs very little. Both work. Lysine works better for me for prevention specifically. I save the antivirals for when I do get one.

Outbreaks cut in half

Outbreaks cut in half. Then cut again. Then basically none.

Skin is firmer too

Was taking this primarily for cold sores. But my skin looks noticeably more firm and plump — collagen synthesis was the reason. Two benefits I wasn't expecting to get together.

I don't talk about this but here's my experience

I'm going to be honest in this review because I think people dealing with the same issue need to hear real experiences.

I get oral herpes outbreaks. They used to come every 3-4 weeks like clockwork — always when I was stressed, always visible, always affecting how I felt about social situations and professional ones. I tried prescription antiviral medication and it helped shorten them but I didn't want to be on medication indefinitely.

My doctor suggested lysine as a supplement with a reasonable evidence base. I've been taking it daily since January. I've had exactly one outbreak in four months. One. That one came during an extraordinarily stressful week in March. Before lysine I would have had 4-5 outbreaks in that same window.

I'm not going to say this works for everyone. But it has worked very clearly for me. I feel like I have my confidence back in a way that's hard to quantify.

Noticed improvement quickly

Felt more resilient to getting sick within 3-4 weeks. Cold sores which used to appear at any sign of stress have not shown up in months.

Works if you're consistent. Miss a week and you feel it.

My doctor recommended it

My GP actually suggested lysine as a safe evidence-based approach for HSV-1. Following the recommendation since January. Only one outbreak in 4 months vs the usual 4-5. Works.

L-Lysine

I started taking this after my cold sore outbreaks were making me miserable. Within 6 weeks I noticed fewer tingling episodes. After 3 months I had my first cold-sore-free stretch since my early 20s. I am 35 and this has been genuinely life changing. My partner also started taking it preventively
