The studies below reference peer-reviewed research on the key active ingredients in this product. These are ingredient-level studies.
AREDS2 Research Group, 2013 · JAMA Ophthalmology
Randomized, double-masked, placebo-controlled trial; n=4,203; 5 years; participants at risk for advanced age-related macular degeneration
Participants at risk for advanced age-related macular degeneration who received lutein and zeaxanthin supplementation did not show a statistically significant reduction in AMD progression in the primary analysis of the full cohort; a pre-specified subgroup analysis among participants in the lowest quintile of dietary lutein/zeaxanthin intake at baseline showed a 26% lower risk of advanced AMD compared to those in the highest quintile who received no supplementation.
Wilson et al., 2021 · Nutrients
Systematic review of RCTs; multiple included studies; participants with age-related macular degeneration or healthy adults
A systematic review found that participants who received lutein and/or zeaxanthin supplementation showed improvements in macular pigment optical density in the majority of included trials; effects on visual acuity were more variable across studies and populations.
Lopresti & Smith, 2025 · Nutrients
Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial; n=70; 12 weeks; healthy adults with regular digital screen exposure
Healthy adults with regular digital screen exposure who received Lutemax® 2020 (containing lutein and zeaxanthin isomers) showed statistically significant improvements in macular pigment optical density and self-reported visual fatigue scores compared to those who received placebo; results reflect outcomes in healthy adults and may not generalize to clinical populations.

How it works
Here's what's in this bottle - and why each ingredient earned its place in the formula.

A yellow carotenoid pigment that accumulates in the macula and lens of the eye, where it acts as a natural filter for high-energy visible light.
Delivered via Lutemax™ 2020, a standardized extract that guarantees a consistent 25% lutein concentration in every capsule, rather than an approximate amount from unstandardized raw material.

Carotenoids that work alongside lutein in the macular pigment, meso-zeaxanthin concentrates at the center of the macula, zeaxanthin in the surrounding ring, together covering the full macular area.
Lutemax™ 2020 provides both zeaxanthin isomers in a ratio that mirrors how they naturally appear in the eye, delivering the complete complement of macular carotenoids rather than lutein alone.

Provides naturally occurring beta-carotene and a broad spectrum of plant carotenoids from a whole food matrix, alongside the standardized extract.
Including whole carrot powder means the formula carries the broader carotenoid spectrum that comes from real food, not just isolated compounds.
